AR and 3D numbers, explained
A flat drawing of the number 3 on a card is a symbol. The same 3 as an object a child can turn over in their hands, walk around and stand on the kitchen floor is a thing. Most flashcard apps stop at the symbol; this one goes one step further, and this page explains exactly how far — and what it needs from your device.
What is actually in there
- Nine 3D models, one per digit from 1 to 9. Each was modelled and textured, not extruded from a font: they have surface detail, a base colour map, a normal map and a roughness map, so the light behaves like light rather than like flat shading.
- Turn them from any side. Drag to rotate the model on screen. The digit is spoken aloud in the language the app is set to, so the shape and the word arrive together.
- Then place it in the room. Tap the AR button and the camera view opens. Sweep the device until the floor or a table is recognised, tap where the number should go, and it stands there at real-world scale — you can walk around it.
- On-screen guidance while the room is being scanned, so a child (or a parent) is not left staring at a camera feed wondering what to do.
- On devices with a depth sensor, the room's surfaces are mapped in more detail, which makes placement steadier.
3D and AR cover the numbers only. Letters, colors and shapes are taught with cards and games; there are no 3D letters, and this page will not imply there are.
The download, stated plainly
The nine models are high-resolution files, around 54 MB together. Shipping them inside the app would make the initial App Store download that much larger for every user, including the ones who never open the 3D screen. So they are not in the app: they are an on-demand asset pack hosted by the App Store, and iOS fetches it the first time the 3D screen is opened.
What that means for you, without the euphemisms:
- The first time you open 3D, you need an internet connection. A progress indicator shows the download. It happens once.
- After that it is on the device and the 3D screen opens offline. iOS keeps the pack cached; it can be evicted if the device runs critically low on storage, in which case the next visit downloads it again.
- Everything else works offline from the start. Letters, numbers as cards, colors, shapes and the games need no connection once the app is installed. The 3D pack is the single exception, which is why it is spelled out here instead of being hidden behind “works offline”.
- Downloading on Wi-Fi the first time is the sensible move if you are on a metered connection.
What your device needs
- 3D viewing: any iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or newer. No camera involved.
- AR placement: a physical device with a rear camera and ARKit support. On a device that cannot do it, the AR button simply is not shown — nothing fails, the 3D view just stays on screen.
- The camera is used only for AR, while the AR view is open, to see the room the number is being placed in. iOS asks for camera permission the first time; decline it and the rest of the app is unaffected.
- The iOS Simulator shows 3D but not AR. Worth knowing if you develop software; irrelevant if you do not.
This part is Premium
The 3D models and AR are part of the Premium tier, along with the two puzzle modes, unlimited daily play and no ads. All four categories, unlimited flashcard learning and four of the game modes stay free. Opening the 3D screen without a subscription shows the subscription screen rather than a broken view.
Prices live inside the app and on its App Store page, so they are always the ones that apply in your country — this site deliberately does not quote a number that could be wrong by the time you tap Subscribe.
Is it a gimmick?
Fair question, and the honest answer is: partly, it depends on the child. Some four-year-olds are gripped by a number standing on the floor at their own height and come back to it daily; others rotate it twice and go back to the matching games. AR does not teach counting by itself — it makes an abstract symbol concrete for the kind of child who needs it to be concrete.
